Be ready to hang out by yourself doing nothing for at least 3 hours. This tour consist in driving you to the oak alley plantation and thats it. The guide leave at 11:00am and pick up you back at 3:20pm, the tour inside the house last 30 mins. What the dont specify in the description is that if you dont purchase the option to visit Laurel (another house) you will need to wait for the people who did, because is the same bus for everyone. Save your money and go with someone else, don't matter if it's a little pricier
We were not able to visit Oak Alley because it was closed but the tour company call us and scheduled us for Houmas House and it did not disappoint! Our tour Renee was so knowledgeable. We had plenty of time to tour the plantation, walk around the gardens, eat and get a beverage at the bar. Incredible experience that did not disappoint!!
The tour was nice and very informative, we had a chance to explore the grounds, do the Big House guided tour (30min, no pictures allowed) and see the reconstructed slave quarters... There was also a short movie on the history of sugar cane production screening in the garden. Some people from our group went to the nearby Laura Plantation as well (2 plantations tour) but I'd say even the Oak Alley Plantation alone is enough if you're planning to explore it in great details... Moreover there is an onsite restaurant with good menu of local dishes and reasonable prices! We had lunch there and didn't regret!
You’re paying for transportation because the entry fee is only $25 to the plantation. Tour was about accomplishments of slave/plantation owners. Glorified their rich lives. Not much about the slaves or their hardships. Not really educational. Plantation stuff was original. Slave stuff was recreated/rebuilt. Made to look very nice. Slave quarters clean and lined with beautiful oaks. Made me sick. Wrong perspective. Disgusting. They have a LONG way to go here.
Kim, our bus driver from New Orleans out to the plantation was so funny, fun, and helpful during our transport. The plantation’s tour is hosted by the foundation that keeps the the place running. It features the main “Big House” tour, (which start every 10 minutes), and then has smaller 10-15 minutes talks about life on the plantation. Very relaxing tour, and gives you time for photos of Oak Alley. They sell excellent and delicious mint juleps.
It looks just like the photos. Breathtaking and well preserved. No photos are allowed to be taken in the big house but everywhere else is ok. So much information is available. There is also a nice restaurant to sit down or a cafeteria style one. Across the walk is a bar for alcoholic drinks as well as a gift shop.
Experiencing Oak Alley was incredible for all the right reasons (beautiful architecture, scenery) and wrong reasons (presence of slavery) and Cajun Encounters was the perfect way to experience this! They were professional, timely educational and very hospitable, displaying that “Southern hospitality”. Highly recommended for both the plantation experience and the company that takes you there!
The driver is very professional and experienced. She showed us some signature buildings along the way, and her driving was smooth and safe as possible. The time we can spend in the plantation is around 210 min or more, which is a plenty of time. I would recommend going for the big house tour first because it will get crowded approaching the lunch time.
