Mike was an outstanding guide. He not only was knowledgeable but his ability to help us visualize the historical experience with narratives that provided both a passionate and historical context for the tour made it memorable. We thank him and Red Clay Tours.

What an amazing tour. Mike is an awesome storyteller and brought the past to life. Very humbling to listen to stories of violence, prejudice and discrimination that black people endured and continue to battle. Highly recommend this tour.

Wow! Everything was eye-opening and chilling. Mike was an amazing guide who shed light on so many topics of the past and today. I learned more in the tour than in my entire history courses. Appreciated the tour immensely!

Wonderfully told story of this difficult period in American history that must be told and understood by all generations if the future is to be a positive one. Mike was a fantastic tour guide and for three hours shared intimate fact, anecdotes and displayed a deep understanding and knowledge that only a local who really cared about their history could do.

Do not miss this tour if you want to learn about the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham! Mike was our guide (his son, Clay, owns the business) and his passion for and knowledge of the story of civil rights in Birmingham makes this tour outstanding. Mike and Clay have built relationships with many in the community of those who lived through the time covered (~1930s to 1960s) and with their offspring. These relationships have resulted in additional information you will not get from a self-guided tour or from books. The tour basically follows a chronological path that ends with the September 15, 1963 16th St Baptist Church bombing. Throughout the tour Mike made several recommendations for films, podcasts and books we can use to further our education on the civil rights movement in Birmingham. The logistics for the tour could not be easier for participants. Parking was free and directly across the street from the pick-up point. The shuttle van was clean and comfortable. Mike thoughtfully included a restroom stop which was much appreciated by our group. The tour itself is not "easy" in that you learn about the relentless inhumane treatment of one group of Birmingham citizens (Black) by another (white). The stories of injustices suffered by the Black citizens of Birmingham over so many years are deeply disturbing. But just as Germany has done with their horrific history, we should make sure all future generations of Americans know the truth about what happened here. This tour is an excellent addition to that quest for truth.
